Ghost (Trainee)

writer. game designer. va. magnus archives. mechanisms. thirteen storeys. macguffin & co. generally won't answer asks about magnus or mechs stuff. won't answer most asks, tbf - I get quite a lot

So, since I have returned to this site, I’ve seen a few people going “oh no! what if Jonny looks at My Posts with the judgemental eyes of The Creator?! what if he reblogs me out of nowhere to the scorn of millions?”

Thus, in the interests of assuaging the growing Climate of Fear, I have composed the following

List of ways Jonny will be interacting with Tumblr dot com

Things Jonny will do

  • Shitpost / reblog shitposts
  • Answer asks that catch my fancy
  • Promote current projects or appearances

Things Jonny MIGHT do occasionally if the mood takes him

  • Quietly browse tags of finished projects (Magnus, Mechs, etc.)
  • Engage with posts that specifically @ me

Things Jonny almost certainly won’t do, but not going to swear to it

  • Answer asks about past projects (I’ve done plenty of Q&As and prefer to let them stand on their own)
  • Meaningfully engage with fandom stuff

Things Jonny will NEVER do

  • Look at anything tagged #do not archive
  • Let you know whether or not I have seen your weird post about me or my work. You will never know.

Hope that clears things up and establishes that you have nothing to fear from my presence here. It’s fine. Go about your business. All is well.

Hi there,

If you feel comfortable answering:

Can a newcomer to The Magnus Archives start with The Magnus Protocol or will that be too confusing if they have not finished the original series first?

Have a good [insert time of day]!

We’re writing Protocol with the intention that you don’t have to have listened to Archives to enjoy it. Anything relevant from Archives should be explained and contextualised when it comes up in Protocol.

That said, obviously certain beats are going to hit harder if you’re familiar with the original series (you might miss out on a few “Oh my god I know THAT voice!” moments) and it may be hard to join in with some of the theorising without that initial grounding, so listening to Archives first is probably a good idea if you have the time and energy for 200 episodes!

Although, now I say it, there are a few ways in which I can imagine being fully steeped in Archives might actually cause you to stumble a bit with Protocol. Certain preconceptions and assumptions that might trip you up. We shall see.

Look I’m really completely normal about the magnus archives (blatant lie) and in a similar way I’ve sort of been completely normal about the magnus protocol ever since the kickstarter, and I hear that more info has dropped on it. The only real social media I have is Tumblr, though, and I’m sort of new here so I don’t really know all the official tma accounts. Any chance you could show me where to look for the new Magnus Protocol info is?

I’m pretty sure the Magnus Protocol tag is going to be the best place to look. If it’s anything like the Archives tag used to be, it’ll be pretty good at posting up new info, announcements, etc in between all the [Charlie Day wildly gesturing at his Pepe Silva board.png]

Coming to me direct is rarely the best way to get that kinda info, though. They obviously keep me in the loop about big stuff, but I don’t have much insight into production/distribution/marketing schedules or similar. I’ve been almost exclusively consumed with the writing and editing side of things, so while I know a lot of things, but almost all of them massive spoilers.

Ah, looks like they dropped the cast announcement for Protocol - knew it was coming soon, but didn’t realise it was today. That explains it!

I’ve been enjoying the Women’s World Cup so much I started thinking of designing a sports-themed RPG, but then I remembered we kind of already did that with Primetime Colosseum, our game about ancient Roman gladiators, in a world where gladiators are basically pro-wrestlers (and also revival potions are a thing)!

In Primetime Colosseum, you play young, up-and-coming gladiators trying not to botch their shot at the big-time. As well as your character, you’ll also create your persona - who you are in the ring - and over the game, you’ll have to balance how popular your persona is with fans and how popular your character is with the powerful family who run your gladiator school (and who provide revival potions after a crowd-pleasing mortus match)! It’s one of 11 system-neutral micro-settings in our anthology, Odd Jobs, so it can work with any system you like (though there’s a small bolt-on mechanic within the game to keep track of your popularity).

You can get Primetime Colosseum with 10 other micro-settings in Odd Jobs here (for hardback) and here (for PDF), or you can listen to Jeff and Jonny playing it on the wonderful @partyofonepod here!

Hello! How do you (and Sasha) find working on re: dracula? Love your work on there!

Thanks! I certainly had a nice time working on it. Was mainly just recording narration on my own which, unsurprisingly, was something I could do without much issue. I’ve also read the book a few times before, and since they didn’t change or alter the text itself (doing it mostly as a sort of full-cast audiobook) it was a pretty smooth VA gig, all told. Really enjoyed the remote rehearsals with Felix, as well - he does a fantastic Renfield and we had a great time riffing together!

Opinions on ballpits?

God, imagine being at Dashcon. I often wonder. From the outside I conceive of the incredible desperation… I think about the vibes. I think about the vibes. I mean, I consider myself a journeyman connoisseur of the bleak, but I cannot say for certain they wouldn’t have killed me stone dead.

Dunno, tho. I wasn’t actually there. Maybe it was fine.

Did Will Navidson’s new house really contain an impossibly long hallway? What about the second story, longer on the inside than on the outside? Perhaps the whole story was invented by that strange man, Zampanò - but what about all the sources he cited?

Was there really ever a House of Leaves, or did our writers simply build… a house of cards?

ID: Dick Clark from Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, standing besides a bird cage which holds a white columbiforme bird. /End ID.

Dick Clark??¹

¹ While Dick Clark did produce² Beyond Belief, its iconic presenter was actually Jonathan Frakes, also known for playing Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

² What does a producer even do? People like to talk about how bosses “do nothing” but I’ve always thought that was a poor criticism, one that just barely misses the point. Of course bosses do things - even things essential for the company’s success - they just get paid too much for it. Your average factory, if you defenestrated all the management, would stop functioning as soon as your satisfaction faded. The problem isn’t that managers exist at all, it’s that they’ve inexplicably been marked as More Important than the people who operate the machines or clean the factory floor or drive the bus or ink the tattoo on the foreman’s bicep (et cetera). You’re still going to have bosses in the communist utopia, they’ll just get the same shitty paycheck as every other bastard who cooperatively owns that grimy old brick shithouse.

Anyway. Point is. I know “producers” do something but I never actually learned what it is. But it’s what Dick Clark did for Beyond Belief.
